University of Alabama--Birmingham

The Costume Survey

Description provided by the program

The Department of Theatre at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is dedicated to developing the next generation of actors, directors, designers, and technicians. With the expertise of 14 full-time faculty members and 4 full-time professional production specialists, the department offers a BFA in Musical Theatre, a BA in Theatre with concentration options in Performance, Design/Technology and General Studies and a minor in Theatre. Students have the opportunity to design, assistant design, and create costumes for our five show season, featuring a large musical and the bi-annual Festival of Ten Minute Plays. Those students with an interest in multiple aspects of design and production are encouraged to consider the Design and Technology concentration, which requires students to complete courses in costume, scenery and lighting. The General BA provides a flexible curriculum that allows for a student to focus on a specific area of design or production. Paid positions are also available to students who have a strong interest in costume construction and patterning. Advanced costume production classes are available in pattern drafting, costume crafts and corset construction.
