Description provided by the program
This a liberal arts undergraduate degree at a college for women. Undergraduate students design major productions, usually after two semesters of course work. They need not be theatre majors to do so. There is a costume design intern plus several work study positions in the costume shop. There are a range of designers and courses here in the Five College Consortium with UMass, Amherst, Mt. Holyoke and Hampshire. The department also houses a large study collection, the Smith College Historic Dress Collection. There are over 3,000 women's garments and accessories from 1790 to 1900. Students can be collection interns, researching donations, helping with some conservation and putting up small exhibits.
