Otterbein University

The Costume Survey

Description provided by the program

Otterbein University's Theatre and Dance Department provides intensive hands-on experience for students desiring a career in professional theatre. The B.F.A. program is an all inclusive four-year sequence of courses covering basic design, theatre technology and visual arts while allowing students to focus on one or more area. The senior year includes a 10-15 week internship at an approved regional or national professional theatre. Class work is augmented with a wide variety of practical production experience in all areas, with the goal of ensuring that students have a basic working knowledge of all technical areas. Costume Technology and Design students have the opportunities of draping assignments on departmental productions, assisting faculty and guest designers and, if able to demonstrate exceptional skill ad maturity, may be chosen to design a departmental production in their senior year. Other design opportunities are also available on student and classroom produced productions. Students have the opportunity to build a portfolio that will display a significant level of professional preparation. The BA in Theatre degree program is designed for students whose professional career goals require more flexibility in their curriculum, such as the pursuit of a second major outside of the department, or a more concentrated focus within the department. All courses are open to students pursuing either degree. Work study and technical assistantships are available in the cosstume shop.
